Deer, ancient oaks and the white Hermitage hunting lodge on its hill: the royal deer park north of the city, 20 minutes away by S-train.
Dyrehaven, the deer park, is a former royal hunting forest just north of Copenhagen and part of the UNESCO World Heritage site of the par force hunting landscape of North Zealand. Herds of red and fallow deer roam freely among some of the oldest oaks in Denmark.
From Klampenborg station, the route enters the park by Bakken, the world's oldest amusement park, and climbs gently across the open plain to the Hermitage, the royal hunting lodge on its hill. It continues west through the forest to Fortunen, the start of the Eremitageløbet race, and returns along the southern edge of the park.
The gravel roads are wide and the hills are gentle by any standard except Danish ones. It is the city's favourite long-run destination and well worth the train ride.
