Copenhagen's running track: a flat lap of Sortedams Sø, Peblinge Sø and Sankt Jørgens Sø, a few minutes from the centre.
If you see one runner in Copenhagen, you will see fifty on the Lakes. The three rectangular lakes, Søerne, form a chain along the western edge of the old city, and the paths on both banks make a loop of about six kilometres that is flat, car-free and easy to follow.
This version starts on Dronning Louises Bro, the bridge that links Nørrebro to the centre, and runs anticlockwise: north along Sortedam Dossering, round the top of Sortedams Sø, back down the Østerbro side, then around Peblinge Sø and Sankt Jørgens Sø before returning to the bridge.
Bridges cross the lakes at regular intervals, so it is easy to cut the loop short or add laps. Locals often quote their times "around the Lakes", and on a sunny evening the bridge itself is the city's favourite place to sit by the water.
Highlights
- Dronning Louises Bro at sunset
- Swans and herons on Sortedams Sø
- The Planetarium on Sankt Jørgens Sø
Practical notes
- Busy with walkers and prams on sunny weekends: run early or keep right.
- The cycle lanes beside the paths are for bikes only. Do not drift onto them.
- Lit after dark and rarely icy, so it is a good winter choice.
